It is Project Social post time again and my team is looking at the most influential blog posts we have ever read. Sounds epic. I look forward to reading what my teammates Laura at “Working Girl” and Dave at the “H.R. Official” are profiling. I am bending the rules and choosing four posts, rather than three, which span my time online and outline four focal points. It was hard to narrow it down to these four.
Community Engagement
Mike VanDervort tweeted a post recently that made a huge impression on me “A Community manager Gets Community Managed” by Lisa Grimm. This post was a case study I could sink my teeth into when trying to explain the “actionable” organic way social media can influence customer’s feelings about your business. I feel it is the “self-actualized” example of how social media works. You are not just broadcasting your stuff. You must learn to make your message conversational. There are people on the other side reading! And they are talking about YOUR brand. So talk back. I love talking about business, HR, community engagement and bacon. You clicked here somehow with a tweet or Facebook post. That is engagement!
Da Biz
When my company moved online in 2005 it changed everything for us. Influencing that change was this 2009 post “Your Culture Is Your Brand” by Zappos Tony Hsieh. Our “customer experience” is still, to this day, our first and foremost focus. It is even more critical when you do not have bricks and mortar and you are producing domestically. Return business is gold. They return because they had a good experience.
Put Up or Shut Up
The organic evolution of social networking is a slow revealing process. After HRevolution in 2009 I came away baffled about how I could really influence and make a difference. HR touches me in all aspects of my business. How could I touch it? In 2010 Victorio Milian started a blog series called “Put Up or Shut Up” . Part of his “Put Up” was starting Project Social. Looking for actionable ways to participate, Victorio inspired me to list my goals. By doing so I now see progress and purpose! Thanks Victorio. Had to list you.
SHRM Connected the Dots
Ben Eubanks has had several posts on how to become involved and influence your SHRM Chapter. “SHRM Chapter Planning and Marketing” is one in a series of posts tackling Chapter influence and social media. My HRevolution experience left me wanting to do something to influence leadership, rather than just talking or blogging about it. Ben had the road map with his posts. Thanks Ben.
So there you have four posts that have profoundly influenced my growth and action. I hope you read them. Wish me luck this week as I meet again with my incoming SHRM Chapter president at MTSHRM. We continue to outline the chapter social media strategy. It has been slow out of the gate. They are a formal bunch. You can follow them on twitter at @mtshrm and watch our social media outreach evolve starting in July. Might be a good case study.
Thanks again to all my influencers. There are more than I could list here in this post. And thanks to my project social partners Laura and Dave. Blogging with you is sweet motivation. Much like bacon.

Great post but I’m afraid it’s completely invalidated by your unauthorized section of 4 posts instead of 3.

Good stuff Lyn, although since you broke the rules and used FOUR posts instead of three I am only going to give you a B- for this post.
You must learn to follow the rules!

Four was balanced numerology for me. Like four sides to square. I guess I could have dropped the first one. But, you gotta admit it was a great post!
