Dang you HR bloggers. I am trying to rationalize why I should keep my SHRM membership. You are not helping. Do I want to be a part of the “club” since a SHRM membership can buy a spot even though I am not professionally certified? Is it worth the membership to have access to the HR document tools? I admit I have used the sample documents. They are a real time saver. As a relative newbie to HR there is some tool value. I used to like following the forums, but now find the LinkedIn groups similar and more energizing. And quite honestly the SHRM forums visually remind me of a mid-90’s list-serve.
What does a membership really get me? That is the question floating the HR blog-o-sphere in the last few weeks. I’m asking it of myself as I get the email prompt to renew. What if it is not about what I get, but what I give? “Oh, it is that crazy social media blogger lady again. She works for herself so she will never understand the legal struggles we have with social media in the workplace. Let me talk to you about the SPHR.” I’ve considered SPHR. Really I have. But, what do you let the membership contribute; practitioners and non-practitioners alike?
But, how can I make a difference using SHRM as a conduit? How can SHRM enlighten me? I’m looking for meaning. And up to this point membership has only brought me a lot of email to my inbox and SHRM Magazine about a lot of stuff I am uninterested in. Maybe it is my fault? I’m an uncertified outsider at the local chapter. Maybe I did not do my due diligence to seek the value of my membership? Is it SHRM’s responsibility to hold my attention? yawn
Lisa Rosendahl nailed it on her blog. Thanks Lisa. I feel the same. I don’t need SHRM to collaborate with HR professionals. Then why do I need SHRM? I don’t feel it needs me. Did I miss something here?
Think I can still get a bootleg copy of Laurie Ruettimann’s Annual 2011 SHRM Conference presentation?

After reading a few more blog posts and seeing grass roots as a way to participate I may give the Middle TN SHRM a chance beyond an exhibit sponsor vendor role? Why go national when local could be more meaningful? Still evaluating. Yes, still reading HR blogs as if they are some palm reader guidebook. Why? Because they are edgy! Because they question. Because they have ideas and are not afraid to share.

Hi Lyn, I think you are on to something when you say local could be more meaningful and getting to know the people on the ground, doing the work – this is where we will see change.
Hey, welcome to the blogging world friend!

Thanks Lisa. The more I think about it the more I think you are right. I will be testing the waters and blogging about it!
